junk in the water

we were out in front of dalhousie sat. we got junk on are lines every 20 min. what was it and is there anything you can do to keep the junk off the line.

Are you referring to an algae like substance that gums up your line and rod eyes making it hard to pull lines.
 
Those are Spiny and fishhook water fleas, crap to deal with when fighting a fish.

If your running Braid dispy's time to put them away and start pulling wire divers.

Rigger rods spool with 30 to 40 lb trilene Big Game using a lighter floro leader or flea flicker line.
