800 is just what you could put on this reel, but if 500 600 or 700 is what you want then this reel will do it with lots of backing.

Who wants to reel in 800' of copper? I let my 400' out to the end of the backing with a tripped dipsey to clean it up and I had to put it in the rod holder to reel it back in, and that''s with a high speed clarion that's 6.4:1.
You copper guys must be built like popeye.

Actually that high speed is working against you, it may take less cranks but you lose the mechanical advantage and easy cranking of a lower ratio. Like trying to tow with a highway rear end compared to a set of 3:73's or 4:11's in the rear end , not much on top end but will pull stumps with ease.  ;D

daves right thats why most big reels have low gear ratios more torque easy to reel in,just takes longer.

A lot of the ocean reels this size you can get in two speed. Low for cranking in beasts, high for quicker return. They start to get pretty spendy fast though!

Give me a high speed 553LS Clarion any day!  I got them when they came out and they are awesome.  I understand the math behind the inches per crank but we aren't fishing tuna or bottom jigging big grouper.  When it comes down to it on my 10 copper rods I spend more time changing out bait and reeling in slack from charging kings then trying to horse them straight in, just turn up the drag,  Fish a week straight with a 25" crank reels next to 53" crank reels and tell me what you perfer.  I did it for 3 years and you can tell right away what works for you.

If money is on the line and the temp is down 150' our 700 rocks. If I wasn't fishing tournaments then I wouldn't fish anything more than a 300 copper. Long copper kills fish.

I agree with Pioneer.  I've had some of those high speed gearsets put in my Convector 55's and it's a hell of alot more user friendly changing out (we run alot of flasher/flies).  It's one thing to change the blade or fly color 10 times and since it's usually me doing it- I'll take the high speed.
