Can anyone tell me if you put, say only 5 colours of lead core out and let out lots of backing can you obtain more depth? Or is the only way to use more colours of lead core?

Appreciate any help regarding this, thanks

I don't know exactly how much you would gain by doing that.  And I'd be afraid of not having enough line left to accommodate a big run from a big fish.  I have a small boat and can't really fit alot of rods on board so in the summer I will generally bring 2 lead cores.  a 5 and a 7,  I have a piece of mono about 2 feet long spliced about 2 or 3 colors up so when I want to alter the depth of the presentation I'll just clip on some pre made snap weights.  It works great I find that if I put 3 ounces of weight on the 5 color it will run like a 10 color.

I don't think you will obtain much more depth by letting out more backing,
you can however get a lot more depth by using these Stinger Divebombs, they are supposed to be attached @ 1/2 way on leadcore,
obviously, heavier the bomb, deeper it dives.
