Salmon fishing first week of Aug on Georgian bay outside Owen Sound

(1/2) > >>

My wife is from Owen Sound, and 3 years ago I decided to make the visit interesting for me as well by taking up downrigging for salmon.  This year was a great year.  Spent a few days up around Gravelly Bay to get away from all the boats near Owen Sound.  Was very successful there and usually only 2-3 other boats in the area during prime times.  I tried every assortment of baits/lures, but almost all success was on meats.  Anchovies and herrings.  The water is warm this year and temps were down around 110 before hitting 44 degrees. The rigger down 110 in 110 - 140 fow had almost all the hits.  I tried 80 and up at times with no success.

Hoping to get back for a week again mid Sept this year.  Hope you enjoy the vids.

That is pretty a awesome report Rizher. I like how in your videos the camera shakes when you run to the rod and at one point it goes up side down :)
We often fish east of your area and spoons seem to work best so far. I had success on herring on lake O this summer but there the fish is bold and not shy of cannon ball so I set the paddle 10-12 ft off the clip. How far off do you set your flasher in GB waters if you dont mid me asking?

rizher:
I do 25 feet back of the ball when more than 80 feet down.  If I run in 80 fow I do a bit more 30-35 back.  Every once in a while I ill run in 70 FoW an nab a laker.  I got a couple this year, but none video worthy  :)  Biggest was 5.5 Ibs.

Thank you. I do slightly longer for spoons and it seems to work. Lots of small lakers this year. but they look healthy. A friend of mine caught a 12 lber 2 wks ago. A few rainbows I caught so far  looked kinda slim.
