Do you mean using a mooching reel off a downrigger or adding a 8-10oz weight to the rod? I have not done the 8-10oz weight or so to a rod but have thought about it. I do use mooching reel and rod set up on the rigger and love it.

No.  Not trolling.  kind of like jigging  with a weight, line counter rod and cut bait.

So, for sure there are videos of Lake Ontario mooching.  I have viewed them myself.  Search topics like Jigging salmon, lake ON or similar.

They have been used in Lake O for a number of years and my buddy Wayne has taken the concept a step further to increase the performance. 1-1 retrieve mooching reels can be sporting but the pick up rate can be detrimental and loose you alot of fish. apart of my work with moby is fishing the tournament circuit for him and he may never let me actually fish the reel in a tournament setting, but the 2:1 retrieve on the GL1 is the only mooching reel i would ever comfortably fish in a competitive format.

Dan, Wayne does make really good reels. I would fish a regular mooching reel in a tournament and not worry about losing a fish on it anymore then I would with any other reel you would use. I have not lost one fish I have hooked with my Rapala mooching reel.

Thats Impressive man ive watched too many fish get dropped on slower retrieve reels so i stay away from that as much as possible. one of the reasons we fish daiwa saltists for charters too
