Backing behind Leadcore
« on: July 20, 2021, 05:49:32 pm »
I’ve got a spare Convector 45 that I’m thinking of adding 10 colours to, how much backing should I add first?
I’ve got a ton of 20 and 30lb big game that I’ll use.

Thanks!

I back everything with 50 lb braid.   300 yards of it.   Buts that just me.

Well, you have a decent sized reel ... you probably could get away with the 20 lb mono ... but I don't really like the idea of the backing being a weaker strength than the core.

I'd put braid on ... get's you enough backing ... you don't want less than 700 ft of backing on the reel ... that might be too much of an ask for 30 lb mono on that reel, particularly after you fill with that thicker 10 core.

I have the same reel with 10 colors. Backing is 200 yards of 50# Trilene Big Game braid.

Assuming you have all 10 colors out ... 200 yards, 600 ft, not bad at all for backing. You shouldn't ever
be spooled. But you probably have another 50 to 80 ft out to clip the board on ... so it's leaving you really
with 550 ft of line on the spool ... the worst I've ever seen is a fish taking out 300 ft to 350 ft, unless the drag
is set WAY too light.

Anyone else get spooled say more than 400 ft by a big fish?

I just flatline it.  No boards.

You run wire divers too?  Aren't you worried about a dipsey popping then crossing into that flatline core?

Hasn't been a problem.  I did hang up my lead core with another boat yesterday.  As intended, the 20# leader broke so all I lost was the spoon and snap swivel.
