Port Dalhousie receives an annual stocking of 25,000 yearling brown trout. This year was a banner year for size and quality.

Never too old to enjoy a delivery

What's not to smile about

These are big!

Now for the second tank

The second batch seem larger!

Notice there are no birds!

Always hard at work

The following pics show the trout feeding along the rip rap. They are not "climatizing" as often occurs when there are significant  temperature variances between the tanker and stocking site. They were aggressively attacking small prey near the surface. I managed to capture one fish as he broke through.

Fifteen minutes later we observe a feeding frenzy

letting them grow up....

what i would do to be out there instead of in the office.....

i'd love to find out when they release them into hamilton harbour...as i'd like to see if there are birds/predation/feeding in the harbour similar to Pt Dalhousie...

but this is why Pt D is the best brown trout fishery on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario (not including man made warm water discharges).

great stuff!!!!

Steve,
I might argue the point of Port Dalhousie being the best on this side of the Lake. Maybe the west end.   ;)  ;)
One of my buddies has a friend that was out saturday morning and they boated 10 browns off Wellington.  ;D  ;D

Flat-lining behind the boat, no boards.  ::)  ::)  ::)

Later
   Al

I would have been out but have the outdrive in for a seal replacement.  :P  :P

i'll be honest al, wellington has some great numbers, but my personal "internet viewing" experience has been the biggest (15lbs plus) browns have all come from between the niagara river and jordan harbour...

i'd love to come down your way and prove my theory wrong though...numbers and size...that would be heaven!!!!

also, flat lining behind the boat is nice....you know, this year so far, all my trolling browns have come from the flat lines behind the boat, and my inline boards have been totally silent....i love when the long line gets hit...medium action bass tackle is all we run out the back.....

ok, now you got me all excited again....

(did the outdrive get all fixed?)

Hey Steve,  you are correct about the big browns coming from the west end. However, back in the old days with the Star Hunt, the brown category was won a couple of times with a brown from down here. in the 19 to 20 pound range.

There are not enough guys that fish for them down here but it is becoming more popular.  :)  :)

No the outdrive isn't fixed yet. Maybe tomorrow.

happy to see the 2010 stockies going in.... hopefully in the future the trout in Dalhousie can have pens of their own  ;)
i sorta wish the GOSD still had trout categories

No point in pen rearing brown trout, they don't imprint to anything like salmon and steelhead do.
